How Much Can a Notary Charge in Florida?
Florida's legal fee limits for notaries, online notarization and mobile service — explained by a Pinellas County notary.
The Short Answer
In Florida, a notary may charge no more than $10 for any one notarial act (Florida Statutes s. 117.05(2)(a)). An online (remote) notarization can cost up to $25 per act (s. 117.275). Witnessing a vote-by-mail ballot must be free.
Mobile notaries who travel to you may also charge a travel or convenience fee. That fee is not set by the statute, so ask for it before the appointment.
Florida Notary Fee Limits
- Traditional (in-person) notarial act: up to $10 per act — s. 117.05(2)(a).
- Online notarization: up to $25 per online notarial act — s. 117.275. Separate platform fees may also apply.
- Witnessing a vote-by-mail ballot: no fee allowed — s. 117.05(2)(b).
- A "notarial act" is usually each notarized signature, so a document with three signers can be three acts.
What a Mobile Notary Adds
When a notary drives to your home, office, hospital or assisted living facility, the travel fee covers time and mileage. It varies with distance, time of day and urgency. Reputable mobile notaries tell you the full cost — notary fees plus travel — before they come.
Loan signings are usually priced as a package that includes printing, the signing appointment and returning the documents.
Ways to Keep the Cost Down
- Count the signatures that need notarizing before you call.
- Have every signer present with a current photo ID at the same time.
- Do not sign before the notary arrives — unsigned documents avoid a second trip.
- Book during regular hours when you can; after-hours and same-day trips often cost more.
